Why suede on a steering wheel?
Grip is the short answer. The napped surface of a suede-style microfibre keys into your palms rather than sliding under them, so you can hold the rim with a lighter grip and still place the car precisely. That's why the material earned its place in motorsport: on a circuit, sweaty hands and a smooth leather rim are a poor combination, and suede solved it. The look followed the function: a suede rim with a contrast centre stripe is now shorthand for a serious driver's car.
There's a comfort case too. The material is soft and warm to the touch, never clammy on a cold morning, and it deadens the slightly slick feel that worn factory leather develops. Hand-stitched tight to the rim by Craig at our Wirral workshop, it also adds a touch of thickness that many drivers prefer in the hand.
Design options
An Alcantara-style retrim doesn't have to mean a plain black wheel:
- Full suede rim: the pure motorsport look, in your choice of colour.
- Suede and leather two-tone: suede-effect grips at nine and three, smooth or perforated leather elsewhere.
- Contrast stitching: match your seats, bodywork or brake calipers.
- Centre marker: a twelve o'clock stripe in leather or contrast stitching.
- Thumb grips: added shaping at the thumb positions for a sportier hold.

Caring for a suede-style wheel
The honest bit: a napped material on the part of the car you touch most needs a little routine care. A light brush every week or two keeps the nap lifted, and marks want dealing with promptly rather than left to soak in. Skin oils are the main enemy: over years of daily use they flatten and darken the grip areas. None of this is hard, but it's real, and we'd rather you chose the material knowing it.
Suede or leather: which should you choose?
Our plain-spoken advice: choose Alcantara-style suede if the car is a weekend, show or track machine, if grip and that motorsport feel matter to you, and if you'll give it a moment of care now and then. Choose leather if the car is a hard-working daily, if you drive in all weathers with no time for upkeep, or if you simply prefer a smooth rim. Is this genuine Alcantara?
On a high-mileage daily driver, yes: the nap on a suede-style rim flattens and darkens from constant hand contact and skin oils sooner than smooth leather shows wear. On a weekend, show or track car it stays looking fresh for years. That trade-off is exactly why we talk through how you use the car before recommending a material.
Does an Alcantara-style wheel wear faster than leather?
Little and often works best: a regular light brush with a soft-bristled brush keeps the nap lifted, and spills or marks want prompt attention with a barely damp cloth before they soak in. Avoid soaking the material or using harsh cleaners. We provide simple care advice with every wheel we retrim.
How do I clean an Alcantara-style steering wheel?

Can I mix suede-style sections with leather on the same wheel?
