Steering wheel retrims, hand-stitched around every curve

Leather and Alcantara-style suede retrims with two-tone designs, contrast stitching and thumb grips, trimmed in our Wirral workshop.

Your steering wheel is the one part of your interior you touch every single time you drive, and it's usually the first part to show its age. Shiny worn leather, cracked lacquer on the grip, stitching that's frayed where your hands rest: a tired wheel can let down an otherwise well-kept cabin. A hand-stitched retrim brings it back better than new, in exactly the materials and design you choose.

What a steering wheel retrim involves

At our Wirral workshop, lead trimmer Craig (with 15 years' experience in automotive trimming) strips the old cover from your wheel, prepares the rim and spokes, and patterns a new cover to fit your exact wheel. The new trim is then hand-stitched tight to the rim, so there are no loose sections, no bunching at the spokes, and a consistent seam all the way round.

Modern steering wheels are more complicated than they look. Most carry an airbag module in the centre boss, and many have multifunction controls, paddle shifters, heating elements and trim inserts built into the spokes. Our patterns are cut and stitched to work cleanly around the airbag housing and every control, so buttons stay usable, gaps stay even, and the airbag unit itself is left untouched.

Materials and design choices

A retrim is also your chance to make the wheel your own:

  • Leather: smooth automotive leather in a wide choice of colours, hard-wearing and easy to keep clean.
  • Alcantara-style suede: a soft, grippy suede-effect material popular for performance cars and grip sections; see our dedicated Alcantara-style wheel retrim page.
  • Two-tone designs: mix materials or colours across the wheel, such as suede-effect grips at nine and three with smooth leather elsewhere.
  • Contrast stitching: pick a stitch colour that matches your seats, your bodywork or your calipers.
  • Thumb grips and shaping: added padding at the thumb positions for a more sculpted, sportier feel in the hand.
  • Centre markers: a straight-ahead stripe at twelve o'clock, popular on track and performance cars.

If we're retrimming your seats or building a full custom leather interior, we can carry the same hide, colours and stitching through to the wheel so the whole cabin reads as one design.

One option deserves its own page: Alcantara-style suede retrims: grip, care and honest suede-vs-leather guidance.

Repairs as well as retrims

Not every wheel needs the full treatment. If your existing leather is sound but the stitching has failed, or one section has worn through, talk to us: we handle seat repairs and trim repairs every week, and we'll always tell you honestly whether a repair or a full retrim is the better value.

Retrim your wheel by post

We know not everyone can get to the Wirral. With Ultimate Trim By Post you can remove your wheel, send it to us by courier, and have it retrimmed and returned to your door. See our postal retrim service page for how it works. You're also welcome to visit us at Unit 6 Carrock Road, Wirral, CH62 3RA, or ask about our nationwide onsite fitting.

Why Ultimate Trim

Everything is done in-house at our workshop (patterning, cutting and hand-stitching) by a trimmer who works on steering wheels, seats, campervan interiors and boats all year round. You deal directly with the person doing the work, and you approve the materials and design before we start. Call us on 0151 559 2515 or email [email protected] to talk through your wheel.

How a wheel retrim works

  1. 1

    Tell us about your wheel

Send us photos of your steering wheel and the look you're after: materials, colours, stitching and any wear that needs sorting.

  2. 2

    Choose materials and design

Pick from leather and Alcantara-style suede options, single or two-tone, with Craig's guidance on stitch colours, grip sections and centre markers.

  3. 3

    Strip, trim and hand-stitch

We remove the old cover, prepare the rim and hand-stitch the new trim tight to the wheel, shaped cleanly around the airbag housing, controls and spokes.

Every wheel is trimmed to order; these are common starting points, and we'll advise on what suits your car and driving.

Steering wheel retrim FAQs

Can you retrim a steering wheel that has an airbag?

Yes. Most modern wheels have an airbag module in the centre, and our retrims are cut and stitched around the airbag housing and the wheel's controls: the new trim covers the rim and spokes without altering the airbag unit itself.

What materials can I choose for my steering wheel?

We retrim wheels in automotive leather and Alcantara-style suede fabrics, in single colours or two-tone designs. You can choose your stitch colour, add contrast stitching, and specify grip sections such as thumb grips or a perforated hold area.

Can I post my steering wheel to you?

Yes: steering wheels are one of the main items we handle through Ultimate Trim By Post. Remove your wheel, send it to us, and we retrim it at our Wirral workshop and return it to your door. You can also bring your wheel or vehicle to us at Unit 6 Carrock Road, Wirral, or ask about our nationwide onsite fitting.

How long does a steering wheel retrim take?

Turnaround depends on the design and our current workload. Contact us on 0151 559 2515 or request a quote and we'll confirm timings for your wheel.

Will the retrim match the rest of my interior?

Yes: because every retrim is made to order, we can match or deliberately contrast your existing seats, door cards and trim. If we've retrimmed your seats, we can carry the same leather and stitching through to the wheel.
