Factory heated seats are one of those options you only miss once you have lived without them, and one of the few that can be added properly after the fact. At Ultimate Trim we retrofit heated seat pads beneath your existing upholstery, or as part of a new retrim, so the finished seat looks exactly as it did before: no lumps, no visible wiring, just a discreet switch and warmth on demand.
All fitting is carried out by our workshop at Unit 6 Carrock Road on the Wirral, led by Craig, our lead trimmer with 15 years' experience. Because we are trimmers first, the part of the job most installers rush (getting the cover off and back on without spoiling the fit) is the part we do best.
How the pads integrate under any trim
A retrofit heating pad is a thin, flexible element that sits between the seat foam and the cover, in both the base cushion and the backrest. The seat cover is removed, the element is bonded flat to the foam so it cannot crease or migrate, and the cover is refitted and re-tensioned. Done properly, the seat looks and feels untouched: the heat simply comes through the trim, whether that trim is leather, fabric or vinyl.
This is why a retrofit pairs so naturally with a leather retrim: the seats are already stripped down, so the pads go in with no extra disassembly. But you do not need new upholstery to have heated seats: we fit pads under original trim every week.
Element types and controls
Modern retrofit elements are typically carbon-fibre or fine-wire designs, chosen for even heat spread, fast warm-up and flexibility over the seat's contours. We will recommend the right element for your seat construction and how you use the vehicle.
Controls are equally unobtrusive: a small switch (usually with separate settings for gentler or faster heat) mounted on the seat side, dash or centre console, wherever suits your interior. Wiring runs hidden beneath the trim and carpet to a fused connection on the vehicle's electrical system.
Cars, campervans and boats
Anything with a 12-volt system can benefit. In cars, fronts are the usual request, though rear seats can be heated too. In campervans, heated cab seats and rear travel seats make cold-weather touring far more comfortable, and the work sits naturally alongside our campervan interior service. On boats, heated helm and cockpit seating takes the edge off early starts, so ask us about it when planning marine upholstery work.
A note on airbag seats
Many modern seats carry side airbags in the outer bolster, with a deployment seam engineered to split when the bag fires. Removing and refitting the cover on these seats (and positioning a heating pad near them) must be done correctly, or the airbag may not deploy as designed. This is the strongest argument against DIY universal kits and for professional fitting: we trim airbag seats routinely and will confirm the correct approach for your exact model before any work starts.

Heated seat questions
Can heated seats be added to any car?
Almost any vehicle with a 12-volt electrical system can have heated seats retrofitted, including cars, campervans and boats. The pads sit between the seat foam and the cover, so they work under leather, fabric and vinyl upholstery alike. Tell us your vehicle when you enquire and we will confirm suitability.
Will I be able to see the heating pads once fitted?
No. The elements are fitted beneath the seat cover and bonded to the foam, so once the trim is refitted there is no visible sign of the installation, just the switch, mounted where you choose.
Do heated seats work under leather?
Yes: leather actually pairs particularly well with seat heating, because leather feels cold in winter and the pads warm it through quickly. Adding heated pads during a leather retrim makes practical sense too, since the seats are already stripped down.
Can you fit heated seats in seats with side airbags?
Often yes, but airbag seats must be handled professionally. The cover has to be removed and refitted without compromising the airbag's deployment seam, and the pad positioned so it cannot interfere with deployment. This is not a job for a universal kit fitted at home, so tell us your model and we will confirm the correct approach.
Can you fit heated seats in a campervan or boat?
Yes. Campervan cabs and rear travel seats can be heated, and we fit marine-suitable heating in boat seating too. It pairs naturally with our campervan and marine upholstery work.
Do heated seats drain the battery?
The pads only draw power while switched on and the engine circuit is live, and they are wired through a fused feed sized for the load. For leisure-battery installations in campervans and boats we will advise on the right wiring approach for your setup.
