"How long will it take?" is usually the second question we hear, right after "how much?". It deserves a straight answer, and the straight answer is that it genuinely depends on the job. A retrim is manufacturing, not fitting a part off a shelf: covers are patterned, cut and sewn for your seats specifically, and the hours involved swing widely with what you ask for. What we can do is show you exactly which factors move the timeline, so you can see where your own job sits, and then confirm the timing in writing when we quote.
Scope: the biggest lever
The single largest factor is simply how much is being trimmed. Two front seats are one job; front seats, rear bench, headrests, armrests and door cards are a different one entirely. Every extra panel is another pattern, more cutting, more sewing and more fitting time. A full leather interior is a substantial piece of manufacturing, while a single damaged panel through our seat repair service is at the other end of the scale.
Vehicle type plays in here too. Campervan interiors often involve bench seats, bed cushions and cab seats together, and marine work brings its own materials and shapes. The more surfaces, the more hours, and it is as simple as that.
Foam and frame condition
A retrim starts with a strip-down, and the strip-down is when the seat tells the truth. Covers hide a lot: crushed base foam, collapsed bolsters, snapped frame clips, tired seat heaters. Sorting these is exactly the right thing to do while the seat is apart, and we would far rather rebuild a sagging seat base than sew a beautiful new cover over failing foam. But repair work is extra workshop time that only becomes visible once the covers are off, which is one reason quoted timings come with a caveat until the seats have been inspected. If we find something unexpected, we talk to you before carrying on.
Bespoke pattern and design work
A like-for-like retrim reuses the shapes the seat already has. A bespoke design does not. New insert shapes, diamond or fluted stitching, contrast piping, perforated sections and logo work all add patterning and sewing time, because each design decision has to be translated into panels that fit your specific seat properly. This is the good kind of extra time: it is the difference between a re-cover and an interior designed for you. If you want to shortcut the decision-making part, our online seat designer lets you try colours, stitching and patterns before we ever cut material, which keeps the design conversation quick even when the design itself is ambitious.
Extras fold in here too. Adding heated seats during a retrim is efficient because the covers are already off, but it is still additional work on each seat that carries heating.
Seats to us, or the vehicle to us?
The last big factor is logistics. There are three broad ways a job can run:
- The vehicle comes to the workshop. Everything happens in one place at Unit 6 Carrock Road on the Wirral, and you collect the finished vehicle.
- Just the seats come to us. For many jobs the seats can come out and travel without the vehicle, including through our By Post service. You keep driving in the meantime if the vehicle is usable without the items being trimmed, and you are only without the seats themselves.
- We come to you. For suitable jobs we offer nationwide onsite fitting, which changes the scheduling again since fitting happens at your location.
Which route makes sense depends on the vehicle, the work and where you are, and it affects both how long the workshop needs and how long you are without your vehicle. Those are two different numbers, and it is worth being clear which one matters more to you when you get in touch.
So what is the actual answer?
You will notice this guide has not given you a number of days, and that is deliberate. Any figure broad enough to cover a single bolster repair and a full bespoke camper interior would be meaningless, and a figure narrow enough to be useful would be wrong for most jobs. What you should expect from us instead is a written quote that confirms both the price and the expected timing for your specific job, based on the scope, the design and how the logistics will run. That number means something, because it is about your seats, not an average.
Tell us the vehicle, what you want trimmed and the look you are after, and Craig will come back with the details. Call 0151 559 2515, email [email protected], or request a quote online.
Retrim timing FAQs
Because no two retrims are the same job. A pair of front seats in vinyl and a full bespoke leather interior with diamond-stitched inserts, repaired foam and heated seats are worlds apart in workshop hours. Rather than quote an average that fits nobody, we confirm timing for your specific job in your written quote.
Why can't you give a standard turnaround time for a retrim?
The main factors are scope (how many seats and panels), foam and frame condition discovered during the strip-down, bespoke pattern work such as new insert designs or one-off stitching, material choices, and extras like heated seats. Whether we work on seats out of the vehicle or the whole vehicle also affects scheduling.
What makes a retrim take longer?
Often, yes. For many jobs the seats can be removed and worked on while you keep the vehicle, which means you are only without the seats rather than the whole car. Whether that suits your job depends on the vehicle and the work involved, so mention it when you ask for a quote.
Can I stay off the road for less time by sending just the seats?
Usually, and it is time well spent. A one-off insert pattern, non-standard stitching or a design that has to be developed from scratch involves patterning and sewing that a like-for-like retrim does not. If you are exploring designs, our online seat designer is a quick way to settle on a direction before work starts.
Does bespoke design work add time?
We tell you. Worn foam, a cracked base or a broken mechanism sometimes only shows itself once the cover is off. If something needs attention beyond the quoted work we explain the options and agree the way forward with you before continuing, so there are no surprises at collection.
What if you find problems once the seat is stripped?
Ask for a quote. Tell us the vehicle, the seats or panels involved and the look you want, and Craig will come back with a written quote that confirms both price and expected timing. Call 0151 559 2515 or email [email protected].
