Few interiors carry as much of a car's identity as a classic Jaguar's. The XJ saloons, the E-Type, the S-Type and the Mk2 all trade on the same promise: deep leather, warm wood and a cabin that feels like a gentleman's club travelling at speed. When that leather has hardened, split along the pleats or sagged into a collapsed cushion, the whole car loses its point, however good the paint and the straight-six sound.
We're not a Jaguar-only specialist, and we won't pretend to be. We're experienced trimmers who love this era of car, and the skills a classic Jaguar interior demands (hand-pleated leather, correct piping runs, rebuilt spring-and-foam seat foundations) are exactly the skills we use every week. This page covers how we approach Jaguar work; our main classic car interiors page explains the wider heritage retrim process.
The wood-and-leather character
Jaguar cabins of the 1950s to 1980s follow a consistent language: broad pleated seat facings, piped edges, leather carried across door tops and centre consoles, all set against veneered timber. Getting a retrim right means respecting that language. Pleat width and count, the position of every seam, the way piping turns a corner on a squab: these details are what make an interior read as "correct" the moment the door opens.
Where your original trim survives, we use it as the pattern, lifting the seam positions and stitch spacing directly from what the factory did. Where it doesn't, we research the specification for your exact model and year with you before a pattern is cut. We source hides in appropriate colours and grains for the period, and we'll always show you material options before anything is cut.
Seats built from the frame up
A Jaguar seat is more than its cover. Decades flatten the original fillings and tire the springs, which is why so many retrimmed classics have seats that look superb and sit terribly. We strip seats back to the frame, sort the springs and webbing, and rebuild the cushioning to the original profile before any leather goes on, so the finished seat has the crown, the softness and the settle that the car had when new.
Original, or original-with-comforts
Plenty of XJ and E-Type owners drive their cars properly, not just to shows. If that's you, we can build in modern comfort without spoiling the period look: firmer modern foams shaped to the original profile, and discreetly fitted heated seats beneath period-style covers. If you want strict originality instead, we'll build it that way. It's your car, and we'll give you honest advice either way; Craig, our lead trimmer, has 15 years' experience across repairs, retrims and full bespoke interiors.
Beyond the seats
Door cards, centre armrests, headlinings, dash tops and boot trim all age at different rates, and we can take on as much or as little as the car needs: a single split driver's seat or the complete cabin. Have a look at our work to see the standard we hold ourselves to, or use our online design tool to explore leather colours and stitch combinations before you commit.
Classic Jaguar interior FAQs
Yes: we colour-match against your existing trim, ideally from a section that has been protected from sunlight, such as under a seat squab or behind a panel. Faded surfaces are a poor reference on their own, so we always look for the truest sample of the original shade before ordering hide.
Can you match the original leather colour on my classic Jaguar?
Yes. We reproduce the seam lines, pleat widths and piping runs from your existing covers, using the old trim as the pattern wherever it survives. If your seats have already been retrimmed incorrectly at some point, tell us, and we can work with you and reference material for your model and year to get the layout right.
Do you retrim Jaguar seats in the original pleated style?
It depends on how far the damage has gone. Surface dryness and light creasing can sometimes be improved, but leather that has cracked through, or stitching that has rotted, generally means new covers. Send us photos and we'll give you an honest steer: we do repairs as well as full retrims, so we have no reason to oversell you.
My Jaguar's seat leather is dry and cracked, is repair an option, or does it need a full retrim?
Yes. We strip seats to the frame, deal with tired springs and webbing, and rebuild the cushioning to the original profile before trimming. On older seats the original fillings have often broken down completely, and new covers over a collapsed foundation never look or sit right.
Can you rebuild collapsed seat foam and springs on a classic Jaguar?
No. Many owners send us just the seats or door cards, especially when a car is mid-restoration. Our workshop is at Unit 6 Carrock Road, Wirral, CH62 3RA, and we also offer nationwide onsite fitting. Call 0151 559 2515 to talk through what suits your project.
Do I need to bring the whole car to the Wirral?
