The VW Transporter T5 is the van that made campervan conversion mainstream in the UK, and by now most of them have earned it: the earliest T5s are over twenty years old, many started life as trade vans, and the seats show every mile. A T5 seat retrim is one of the most transformative jobs we do: the cab is where you spend every driving hour, and fresh, properly supported seats change how the whole van feels. T5 seat configurations we retrim
Most T5s left the factory with a single driver's seat and either a single passenger seat or a double passenger bench, and we retrim all three, including the fold-down centre section and cup-holder back on the double bench, which takes a beating as an improvised table. Beyond the cab we cover:
- Kombi rear seats and bench rows, including removable rears
- Rock and roll beds fitted during conversion, with cushions trimmed to match the cab exactly
- Captain and swivel seats, whether factory-style or fitted as part of a conversion
- Armrests and headrests, trimmed to match rather than left as giveaway originals
Where T5 seats wear first
The pattern is remarkably consistent. The driver's outer base bolster goes first, scuffed and split by years of sliding in and out of a high cab. The base foam underneath compresses next, so you sit in the seat rather than on it. Original cloth fades unevenly where sunlight falls through the windscreen, and on ex-trade vans the passenger bench often carries paint, plaster or tool damage the cab never recovers from. None of this is terminal: it is exactly what a retrim is for.
What a T5 retrim involves
We remove the seats (or you deliver just the seats to us), strip the original covers, and pattern new ones from them, so everything fits the T5 frame precisely, including the bench's split sections. Damaged or collapsed foam is repaired or replaced before the new covers go on, then everything is fitted and tensioned by hand in our Wirral workshop. Lead trimmer Craig has 15 years' experience, and you can plan colours, stitching and piping with our design service before anything is cut.
Materials that suit T5 life
Because T5s work hard (dogs, bikes, beaches, kids), leatherette is the most popular choice: it wipes clean, resists spills and looks convincingly like hide. Genuine leather suits T5s that double as the family car, and fabric, including OEM-style cloths, is the route if you want to keep or restore the factory look. Mixing materials, such as leatherette wear faces with fabric centres, works well on hard-used vans.
Worth adding while the covers are off
Two upgrades cost far less during a retrim than as separate jobs, so ask about both when you enquire:
- Heated seat pads, fitted invisibly under the new covers with a discreet switch, transformative in an uninsulated T5 cab on a cold morning
- Sports-foam upgrades, adding firmness and bolster support that high-mileage T5 seats lost long ago

Yes, and on a T5 we usually recommend it. The base foam on high-mileage Transporters compresses and collapses long before the frame gives up, so we rebuild or replace the foam while the covers are off. New covers over tired foam never sit right.
My T5 seats are sagging as well as worn, can you fix both?
Yes. If you only want the worn cab seats done, we can source OEM-style fabrics and colour-match leathers and leatherettes so the new trim sits alongside your original rear seats and door cards without looking like a patch.
Can you match the rest of my T5's original interior?
No. You're welcome at our workshop at Unit 6 Carrock Road, Wirral, CH62 3RA, but we also offer nationwide onsite fitting, useful if your T5 is mid-conversion or laid up.
